Facts about the health consequences of torture and other
ill-treatment methods

By DIGNITY's Health Team

This is a series of one-page fact sheets each defining a method of torture or ill-treatment, recapping related international standards and outlining the health consequences.

We use the torture definition of the UN Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT).

The purpose of the fact sheet series is to empower partners with information; to raise awareness of professional staff who encounter survivors, and to initiate dialogue on the use of these methods.

The fact sheets are overseen by Dr. Jens Modvig, MD, PhD, Director of DIGNITY’s Health Department, and Chairperson of the UN Committee against Torture (CAT). They are written by members of the DIGNITY health team as listed on the individual factsheets. The overall editor is Maha Aon, Senior Programme Advisor at DIGNITY.
